Endodontics
Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the treatment of the inner part of the tooth (colloquially called the nerve tissue) called the dental pulp. The pulp is a structure of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue that forms the living tissue of the tooth. The pulp can become infected or inflamed due to tooth decay, trauma or other causes. In this case, endodontic treatment is required to save the tooth. Endodontic treatment involves removing the infected or inflamed part of the pulp and cleaning, shaping and filling the canals. This procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia and may take several sessions. Endodontic treatment saves the tooth, relieves toothache, improves chewing functions and restores aesthetic appearance.
